This is what CWM says about the opportunity:

God’s mission in history has always been a celebration of bearing witness in the midst of Empire. God became flesh in Jesus Christ in an imperial world, and Jesus lived out his life in accordance with the will of God as a counter-imperial praxis. The mission of the church is therefore to continue the praxis of Jesus to contest the claims of the Empire by affirming, protecting, and celebrating movements of life. Mission in the midst of Empire is the Christian praxis of engaging in the public affairs of our times offering critiques, insights, and alternatives to transform our social relations, based on the vision of the reign of God.

CWM has committed that young people should be included in the life and witness of our communities, not as recipients but participants in God’s mission and vital to the Ministry of Jesus. Young people should be encouraged to participate in leadership roles thus giving them an opportunity to shape the life and witness of an inclusive community.

Our young people believe that there is an objective and urgent need for radical and rapid change in the society in which we live. There is need to struggle for a total liberation of our people from structures which do little honour to human dignity and enslave them and stunt their lives. The gospel of Jesus convinces us of the obligation of the Christian community to get deeply involved in this struggle for freedom and to become a sacrament of liberation otherwise the Church will no longer appear credible.

As part of 40th Anniversary celebration of CWM, we are organizing a Global Youth Forum with the theme Building Disciples in the context of Empire: Reimagining Church on 22 to 28 August, 2017 in Johannesburg, South Africa. We are expecting more than 100 young people to take part in this worldwide gathering to create a platform for young people to address the challenges they perceive Empire poses and how to address to establish a just society. This will give an opportunity for envisioning a fresh vision towards reimagining church.
